Sliding Patio Doors for Your Home

If you have gorgeous outdoor space, you need the perfect patio door to set the tone and create an inviting entrance for you and your guests.

Usually, the decision comes down to french doors, which open and close via hinges, or sliding patio doors, which open and shut horizontally along a sliding track.

While these doors are more expensive than a typical single exterior door, the payoff is usually 100% worth it.

What Are Sliding Patio Doors

Traditionally, sliding doors consist of two large glass panels; one panel remains fixed and the other slides open and closed, providing a wide entrance to a yard, patio, or deck.

Nowadays, patio sliders come in a variety of styles – some of which even mimic a french door look – so it’s up to the homeowner to choose the best door for their home and location.

Some of the most typical materials used for a sliding patio door include wood, vinyl, and fiberglass.

  • Wood: Wood sliders give a traditional and high-end look. While these doors are attractive, wood requires regular maintenance through the course of its lifetime. They are also one of the most expensive material choices.
  • Vinyl. Vinyl is an excellent choice for sliding patio doors. Vinyl is exceptionally energy efficient – especially when paired with high-quality glass. Vinyl sliding doors can be matched to virtually any paint color and require very little maintenance.
  • Fiberglass. Fiberglass doors match vinyl in terms of their low-maintenance and high energy efficiency. They can be painted any color. One of the biggest differences is that fiberglass is a stronger material.

Pros and Cons of Sliding Patio Doors

The Pros:

Space savers
One of the major benefits of a sliding door is that nothing is obstructed indoors – or out – by a door swing. It maximizes living space on both sides.

A lighter view
Not only will your interior space be transformed by the additional natural light, sliding patio doors provide a grand-sized view of your outdoor space. It’s a way to bring the outdoors in, so to speak.

Ventilation
An open sliding patio door is about as big of an open window as a house can get! Again, no door swing or propped doors means maximized space – in this case, for airflow.

Entertaining
Slider doors are great for entertaining in the warm weather months. Your interior entertaining space will be increased by the square footage – or acreage – of your outdoor space. Plus, when it comes to moving furniture in and out – the width offered by sliding doors can’t be beat.

The Cons:

Space
They require a large amount of wall space so if you have a small room, you may be better off installing a single french door to keep the light and view, and conserve wall space.

Cost
Sliding doors aren’t cheap. That being said, a quality door will last a lifetime so the investment is probably worth it.
