Single Exterior Doors for Your Home

Single exterior doors serve a variety of functions; whether they are the focal point of your entryway, used as an exterior entrance to a garage, or serve as the inviting segue from your living space to an outdoor sanctuary, it’s important to select a door which is attractive, functional, and energy efficient.

Types of Exterior Doors for Your Home

Regardless of where the door in installed, single exterior doors come in three basic varieties: solid panel, glass paneled, or a combination of both.

The type you choose will depend on the door’s application, your budget, and the door’s location. Here is a brief overview of each type.

Traditional Entry Doors

Most entryways to a home consist of a single exterior door. Double exterior doors are also an option depending on the size and scope of your home. Entry doors are usually made in one of three materials: wood, steel, and fiberglass.

  • Wood: Doors made from wood offer a traditional look but are more expensive and can require more maintenance and upkeep in the long term. Wood has a sturdy feel and can be stained or painted virtually any color. You might have to pay extra to have them drilled for doorknob/lock assemblies.
  • Steel: They come pre-primed, weather stripped, and can be painted any color. They are secure and very energy efficient, which is a bonus. Single exterior doors made from steel will require very little maintenance over the course of their lifetime.
  • Fiberglass: These doors offer the best of both worlds; they provide the sturdiness and low-maintenance benefits of steel but can be made with a faux-wood grain appearance to give the traditional appearance of a wood door.

Traditional entry doors can come with a variety of accoutrements. A homeowner can select a door with a glass insert, or flank a single exterior door with sidelites for a little artistic flair.

You can also install a glass insert yourself if you are up to the task. These little extras can make a big difference in your entry door’s overall appearance.

Patio Doors

You may want a single exterior door going from your home to an outside space. While any door will do the trick, french doors are a popular choice. They function as a picture window, as well as a door, inviting light – and a view outside – to your interior living space.

Because of all the windows, you will want to purchase a high-quality door material and windows which are energy efficient. Vinyl window frames are always a good option; they are affordable, low maintenance and can be painted virtually any color.

Utility Doors
In some cases, single exterior doors are used more like a utility entrance into a garage, laundry room, or other workspace. The options for door/window materials are similar to a traditional entry doors. If the door is in a less visible area, homeowners usually select a basic model and paint it to match the house.
